PREPARATION FOR BOARDING YOUR PET


Before showing up at your boarding kennel or your veterinarian's office, there are some things that you should do to ensure that your pet has a healthy and happy stay.

You should make reservations at least one week in advance, two weeks over holiday periods. Most kennels will make accommodations in case of an emergency, but they do not like to have unexpected guests, just because the owner forgot to call.

There is some information that you will be asked to provide when you arrive at the kennel, and it makes things much easier if you bring it with you. You should bring vaccination certificates or other proof of vaccinations. Also, bring any medications that the animal is taking, along with the name of the drug and the dosage. You should also be prepared with any special instructions for your pet's care. If your animal is a poor eater, is prone to diarrhea, should be watch for scratching, or any other potential problems, let us know.

When you call to make your reservations, ask if we have the food that your pet is accustomed to eating, if we don't, please bring food with you. A change in diet is one of the major causes of diarrhea in both dogs and cats.

If there is a problem that you would like checked while your pet is staying here, let us know. We can make arrangements with the Pennsylvania Specialty and Emergency Associates at Hickory Veterinary Hospital to have a veterinarian examine your pet while it is boarding at the Pet Inn. You should be specific describing the problem your pet is experiencing. Don't simply say, "Check his skin" or "Look at the lump on his leg". To make an accurate diagnosis and properly treat the problem, we need a complete and accurate history of the problem.

If your pet has not been vaccinated against rabies and distemper in the last year, and kennel cough in the last six months, have it done at least one week before boarding.

Decide whether you want your pet bathed and/or groomed before going home and let the receptionist know when you drop your pet off.

Be sure to tell the receptionist your expected date of return. If this changes while you are boarding your pet, please call and let us know. You should also bring a telephone number where you can be reached. In case there is a problem or we need more information, we will have to be able to contact you.

By doing a few simple things and being prepared when you drop off your pet, your pet's stay will be a much better experience for both pet and owner. Remember, write down any important information, and bring medicines and food along with any special instructions. Anything you tell us about your pet will enable us to make his/her stay healthy and happy.
